HIV Integrated health services for the young population.

Area of intervention

MACHAKOS COUNTY, Machakos, Kangundo, Kathiani, and Mwala sub-counties.

OBJECTIVE

The project aims to strengthen the public health system services to help reduce new HIV infections, AIDS-related mortality and decrease stigma between teenagers and young people in Machakos County by contributing to the national strategy against HIV.

MMI ACTIVITIES

MMI is in charge of activities aimed at strengthening treatment adherence by:

• Organising training and Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions on the topics of Integrated Health Care of HIV and TB/HIV co-infection aimed at health and social workers (CHVs), in collaboration with selected hospital facilities
• Strengthening of the counselling and psychosocial support service in public hospital facilities to promote treatment adherence among HIV positive adolescents and young people
• Strengthening of the peer education service for the social empowerment of young people in treatment. HIV-positive young people selected as 'peer educators' will be responsible for promoting accurate, correct and up-to-date messages to other HIV-positive adolescents and young people, with the aim of reducing stigma, and will participate in sex education activities in schools.
• Supporting UNIVR in conducting on-site implementation of operational research on the relationship and impact of phenomena such as disclosure on treatment adherence and the fight against stigma and discrimination.

BENEFICIARIES

The project is aimed at:

• 27,766 adolescents and young adults (10 - 24 years).

Indirect beneficiaries are estimated on the basis of the 6 hospital facilities where the project operates, with an estimated 175,544 people reporting to them.
