Training and care to reduce mortality in Inhambane Province

Il context

In Mozambique, and particularly in Inhambane Province, access to essential health services remains severely limited, especially in rural areas far from health centres. In this context, the population — first and foremost women and children — is exposed to high mortality rates linked to childhood illnesses, HIV, trauma and maternal and child health complications, worsened by the shortage of trained staff, geographical distance and limited coverage of prevention, diagnosis and treatment services.

The project area includes the districts of Funhalouro, Massinga, Morrumbene, Homoine, Panda, Maxixe and Cidade de Inhambane, where around 80% of the population lives in rural settings and where many deaths still occur outside health facilities. In these areas, the Mobile Brigades are a key tool for reaching the most remote communities, but the regularity of services, the continuous training of health workers and the strengthening of case management systems remain essential conditions for improving the quality of care and reducing avoidable mortality.

proJECT

The project aims to contribute to reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality among the population of Inhambane Province by increasing knowledge and access to treatment for the main causes of death in the districts involved. The intervention will run over 36 months and will work in an integrated way across three priority areas: strengthening the skills of health personnel, improving the diagnosis and treatment of trauma patients, and expanding community-based services for HIV, tuberculosis and paediatric conditions.

Planned activities include training health workers on trauma, HIV/TB and the main childhood diseases; on-the-job training during mobile team outreach activities; the introduction of a Trauma Registry in four health facilities in the province; and the consolidation of services provided through Mobile Brigades and TARV Móvel in rural communities. In this way, the project aims to strengthen the local health system in a sustainable manner, improving the quality of care, continuity of assistance and the response capacity of facilities and health workers for the most vulnerable groups of the population.
