Health services for rural communities in the Inhambane Province

Area of Intervention

Inhambane Province, Districts of Morrumbene, Homoine, Massinga, Funhalouro, Panda

OBJECTIVE

The project aims to ensure access to basic health services for the most disadvantaged communities in the four districts, with a focus on women's and children's health, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV and tuberculosis, and through activities to train health personnel and support health centres.

MMI ACTIVITIES

MMI activities aim to achieve three results:

  1. To guarantee and improve the provision of basic health services for communities in the target districts, supporting the districts in the implementation of Brigadas Móveis (mobile health teams), integrating the minimum services required by national and international protocols (primary health care) and to guarantee their regularity and quality, by training health workers, providing appropriate complementary equipment and carrying out awareness-raising activities for the population accessing the BMs, particularly women and children under 5 years of age. Primary health services include vaccinations, maternal and child health services ((antenatal and postnatal visits for mothers and newborns, family planning consultations), diagnosis and treatment of common diseases such as malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory infections, and diagnosis of acute and chronic malnutrition.
  2. Improve HIV and TB prevention, diagnosis and treatment services and referral to the national health system, through integration and coordination with services already offered by the BMs. The aim is to bring HIV and TB screening and treatment services directly to the communities, ensure adherence to treatment and provide constant follow-up of patients. In addition, training of health workers on the diagnosis and management of HIV/TB co-infection is planned to ensure more effective management of patients.
  3. Establishment of a small analysis laboratory for study and investigation purposes to carry out control tests of the GeneXpert EDGE (bacilloscopies) apparatus and analyses necessary for the diagnosis and investigation of the main diseases present in the local context (malaria, tuberculosis, parasitosis, anaemia). It will also serve as a collection point for the equipment used by MMI to support the national health system in its activities in the communities
