Mozambique - Salubrix: water services and waste management

Salubrix: water services and waste management for the health of the people of an urban and peri-urban area in Mozambique

THE CONTEXT

36,6% of the population in Mozambique does not have access to a safe source of water. As of today the area of Maxixe and its 159.000 inhabitants have a low coverage degree of water services, and a scarce efficency of water and waste management because of a high geographical and demographical spread and because of a shortage in economical resources and investments in the planning, organization and management of those public use systems.

After a need analysis it was assessed that the city has 69 water sources at the moment: 51 small supply systems (aqueducts) and 18 manual pump wells, with a 43,71% water coverage degree. The central neighborhoods are the only ones with an aqueduct that takes water directly from the river and delivers it to homes after a purification process. The most peripheral neighborhoods have the same services as rural areas with electrical pump sources (where possible), solar panel systems or manual pumps. There is no distribution grid that delivers directly to homes. There is also a small water testing lab but it is not equipped for microbiological testing needed to assess water resources from superifical sources. About 50% of the estracted water is lost in the grid, reducing the amount available to the population and sending to waste almost half of the extracted water.

For what concerns waste management, the Municipality of Maxixe manages primary collection in 5 out of 19 neighborhoods in the city, without being able to ensure an adequate services because of the scarcity of the available means and tools that are necessary for an efficient collection. Thec city lacks bins and dumpsters in the areas with the hightes human concentration, which causes waste to be left on beaches and by the streets. The dump in use is located in an area where red sand has been used to level streets and, thorough the years, waste has been accumulated without any preparation of the soil underneath and without any monitoring of the entrance and exit of wasye and authorized personnel.

THE PROJECT

The project Salubrix: water services and waste management for the health of the people of an urban and peri-urban area in Mozambique has the goal to improve water services and waste managemend in the city of Maxixe.

The intervention on drinking water supplies involves the extention of the the water grid and the implementation of a lab for micobiological testing and the equipment of chlorine dosage systems.  In particular, the lab will be equipped and technical support for water microbiological testing will be provided, along with tools and materials for water purification, local technician will be formed on the use of new technology for water treatment, 400 new water grid connections along with 2 new isolated supply systems will be installed (around 12.000 people will have drinking water), a new software will be installed to monitor the distribution on the grid, and the water treatment plan of the Inhanombe river will be monitored. In addition, the population will be involved in awareness interventions to promote a safe, hygienic and sustainable use of water for a better health and to avoid wasting.

The waste management services will focus on extending the collection network, introducing new tools and materials, as well as on improving the dump that is currently used to collect waste. In particular, equipment will be purchased to extend and innovate the collection system, the deposit and storage in the dump will be improved and the collection and management of waste will be monitored. There will also be interactive awareness sessions to promote a good waste disposal and reduce burning and burying. These activities will be implemented over the three years of this project.
