South Sudan - Supporting activities of basic and pediatric health

A referendum took place in Southern Sudan from 9 January to 15 January 2011, on whether the region should remain a part of Sudan or become independent.

On 7 February 2011, the referendum commission published the final results, with 98.83% voting in favour of independence. Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir has accepted the outcome of the vote.

The official predetermined date for the creation of the independent state of Sud Sudan is 9 July 2011.

Brief History To meet the needs of community health, particularly maternal and child health in South Sudan, the local NGO AAA-Ali Arkangel Association has long worked with Medicus Mundi Italy, for the promotion of health activities and basic social and health education.
In previous projects MMI was committed to support the training of tens of village health volunteers (Village Volunteers) and traditional midwives (Traditional Birth Assistants) and to improve the professionalism of health service workers in the hospital in Marial Lou. This new project aims to continue the supporting both of primary health care work of the Village Volunteers and Traditional Birth Assistants, and the activities of pediatric care and training of the hospital staff in Marial Lou and Gordhim.
Project Goal Improving the standard of health care basic services in Mapourdit and Yirol and improving the pediatric care in the hospitals of Marial Lou and Gordhim  millennium-development-goals
Beneficiaries
  • in and out peditric age patient (400 children)
  • about 30 Village Volunteers and Traditional Birth Assistants
  • paediatric medical staff of the two hospitals
  • indirect beneficiaries: all the families and communities in the territory of Mapourdit and Yirol and the population under the responsibility of hospitals Marial Lou and Gordhim (approximately 350,000 people)
